In the southeast of Ko Tao is a dive site named Shark Island or Red Rock (Kong Sai Daeng) which mainly consists out of two small granite rocky outcrops that rise above the surface separated by a narrow channel. Shark Island is often visited by dive operators from Ao Chalok Ban Khau in the south of Ko Tau and is only three hundred meters from shore, just too much to reach it by swimming.
It is a place suitable for experienced as well as novice divers. Visit the twenty meter deep rocky walls to the north where you will find plenty of fish such as snappers, filefish, sweetlips, groupers, porcupines and puffer fish. Beautiful white eyed morays are present and lucky divers will see some majestic huge sea snakes. The south is a bit shallower and can often be reached by drift diving from the north. The soft coral formations there are absolutely spectacular and considered by many the best in the Gulf of Thailand. The shallow coral gardens are filled with purple anemones, hawksbill turtles and white nudi branches. The inshore side of the rocks is only seven meters deep and perfect for snorkellers and safety stops.
The two small rocks resemble a shark swimming above the surface, hence its name. Besides this physical resemblance it is also an area where many different types of sharks can be found. Black and white tip reef sharks are common, as well as leopard sharks and grey sharks. Sometimes you can even see whalesharks feeding on the extremely rich waters. Enjoy one of the best dive sites in Ko Tou.
