Kao Lak is a dive destination comparative to its southern neighbours Phuket and Krabi. Although still a bit less crowded with fewer tourists, it lies at the base of Thailand's greatest dive attraction; the Similans. Kao Lak is only sixty kilometers east of the Similan and Surin islands and is therefore the perfect place to start your live-aboard tour. Besides being the gateway to the Similans, it is also a perfect destination for day-trips to some of Thailands best dive sites such as Richelieu Rock. They often tend to be a bit cheaper because you will spend less time on the boat. And for the time limited divers it is possible to book single day speedboat trips and hovercraft tours so that you can still do a few dives at the nearest Surin and Similan dive sites.

All the dive shops that pop up have found many artificial reefs just offshore, but one of the more popular offshore dive site is the Boonsung Wreck, a great tin ore processor wreck at only twenty minutes away. Khao Lak is a cheap and relaxing place, perfect to familiarize yourself with diving before joining the speedboats and liveaboards. Take a look at Khao Lak Hotels for more information about finding hotels in the area of Khao Lak and around.
