The west coast of Phuket offers enough possibilities for diving although they are less spectacular and better suitable for trainees and snorkellers.

It is possible to dive along Phuket's west coast as well, although these dive sites are often less spectacular than its offshore neighbours. Many of the beaches are lush tropical paradises, where tourism has become the main source of income. Beautiful resorts, white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, superb cooking and all sorts of water activities one can think of. These dive sites are often crowded with training divers who are taking their first steps into diving doing their open water skills. It is a great area for tourists who have not only come to Thailand for its diving but more for its nightlife, parties and entertainment. The west of Phuket is not the most common spot for dive tours to go to but it definitely is a cheap place to do your open water course. Arranging some sort of diving is much easier here. Just book yourself on a long tail boat, a snorkelling boat or just grab your mask and fins and start swimming offshore.
Several of the better known dive sites are around the small island of Ko Pu, at one kilometre west of Kata beach. Other known beaches are Patong Bay, Freedom Beach, Meridian Reef, Paradise Beach and Karon Beach (Karon Pinnacle). An old tin mining excavator wreck just away from Bang Tao Beach is covered in hard corals and Andaman sea fish. A bit more offshore you will find a reef named Amanpuri reef which has some excellent wildlife and soft coral formations. The scenery underwater doesn't differ much as they all offer simple coral growth, rocky surfaces and small schools of common reef fish. It are nice and cheap dive sites if you happen to be around, but if you want to do some real diving we recommend taking tours that visit the nearby offshore reefs.
