The HTMS Khram of type LSM-469 was a former United States landing vessel used to transport tanks, troops and equipment to the beach. She was donated to the Thai government after World War II on May 25, 1962. When she was of no use anymore, the Thai ministry decided to create an artificial reef out of it to honour crown prince Maha Vajiralongkorn's 50th anniversary. This sixty meter long ship was prepared well before they sank it just of Koh Phai (Bamboo Island's) south side on February 2003. The island of Koh Phai is used by the military so be careful not to start sunbathing ignorantly at some of its spectacular beaches.
The currents can be extremely strong from time to time and eye sight can be reduced to less than five meters. Normally, you will see marine life such as sweetlips, batfish and bluespotted stingrays. Some of the ships compartments are filled with schools of fish and several parts have started to get some colour. They drilled holes in the HTML Khram which are now excellent opportunities to enter and exit the wreck. Be careful with some of the rooms because they have huge steel water tight doors and are still able to fall into its lock as soon as you have entered the room. You can still access the bridge, radio room and engine room but don't reduce visibility even more by kicking up silt.

Seafari was the first scuba diving operation to open in Pattaya and one of the first in Thailand. Founded by Bill Burbridge back in 1970, it's still actively serving scuba divers from all over the world. If experience is "the best teacher", we've got more than 40 years of diving Thailand and that certainly says something!
