Koh Tao or Turtle Island, named after its turtle-like shape, is a pretty and small island in the Gulf of Thailand. Its main settlement is Ban Mae Hat (Mae Haad Town), located on the southern edge of the almost 2km long Sairee Beach, a remote white beach with turquoise waters and excellent scuba and snorkeling conditions right from the beach. At Koh Tao you can find anything, from yoga classes to Thai kickboxing, from boulder rock climbing to sail charters and from wicked nightlife to Thai cooking courses. Although tourism is big, the island holds its charm as an old fishing village.

The largest town in the south is Chalok Baan Khao, bordered by Taa Toh Lagoon and Saan Jao Beach (Buddha Rock), and quickly becoming as popular as Ban Mae Hat. The relatively remote and empty northeast of Koh Tau offers secluded bays and pristine beaches. Other popular spots around the island are Nangyuang Island, Hin Wong Bay, a whale skeleton, the diamond caves and the spectacular views from the 313 meter high hill Two View.

Koh Tao is considered one of the best places to dive in the Gulf of Thailand. There are spectacular walls, steep pinnacles and an extremely diverse underwater world. There are plenty of breeding places for Hawksbill Turtles and Green Turtles, tens of snorkeling and diving sites. Some of the more popular are the amazing pinnacles Chumphon Pinnacle and South West Pinnacle. Another long time favorite is Sail Rock with its excellent chances to dive with whale sharks and manta rays. Wherever you go, the waters are clear, clean, warm and rich in marine life.
