Koh Chang or Elephant Island is one of Thailand's most famous tourist destinations; not only because of scuba diving. It is with 30 km long and 8 km wide the second largest island after Phuket and belongs with 52 other small islands to the protected Koh Chang archipelago since 1982. Koh Chang is located near the Cambodian border, filled with tropical rainforest, waterfalls, spectacular wildlife and some of the prettiest and whitest beaches in Thailand. Activities easily arranged besides diving are bird watch tours, elephant riding, fishing trips and jungle trekking. Wildlife such as parrots, wild boars, sunbirds and hornbills are often spotted in the deep jungle during tours.

Most of the island is uninhabited because of the steep hills and many cliffs. Houses have only been built along its coastline, leaving the center of the island covered with impenetrable virgin rainforest, unspoiled natural beauty, steep hills, cliffs and its highest peak named Khao Jom Pasat at 744 meter above sea level. Most of them operate from Koh Chang's most famous beaches named Hat Sai Khao (white Sand Beach), Hat Khlong Phrao, Hat Kai Bae and Ban Bang Bao. There, at the west of Koh Chang, you will find many long stretches of tropical white beaches filled with all kinds of resorts, restaurants and guesthouses.

Divers can find seamounts, excellent hard coral reefs, crystal clear waters, boulders, a great Thai colonial wreck and many different and healthy species of fish and corals. Dive shops are popping up in no time and scuba diving is becoming the number one tourist attractions with cheap courses and easily arranged day tours. Ko Rang is famous for its snorkelling paradise, shallow waters and wide variety of marine life. Other famous dive sites are Koh Mai Si Lek and Koh Wai which is an island a bit more remote and less visited making it perfect for explorative dives. Enjoy this paradise with excellent nightlife, Thai cooking and a very relaxed atmosphere.
