Kao Lak is establishing itself as a dive destination comparative to its southern neighbours Phuket and Krabi. Although still a bit less crowded with fewer tourists, it lies at the base of Thailand's greatest dive attraction; the Similans. Kao Lak is only sixty kilometers east of the Similan and Surin islands and is therefore the perfect place to start your live aboard tour. They often tend to be a bit cheaper because you will spend less time on the boat. And for the time limited divers it is possible to book single day speedboat trips and hovercraft tours so that you can still do a few dives at the nearest Surin and Similan dive sites.
All the dive shops that pop up have found and created many artificial reefs just offshore, but the only offshore dive site worth mentioning is the Boonsung Wreck, a great tin ore processor wreck at only twenty minutes away. Khao Lak is a cheap and relaxing place, perfect to familiarize yourself with diving before joining the speedboats and liveaboards.
